Group weight loss programs are good for both losing weight and keeping it off  . They have been around for years, a good examples are Weight Watchers or Physicians Weight Loss Centers. But the cost of these programs can be too high for some. Don’t worry, there are alternatives to these big name programs.

You can try less informal approach. Instead of joining a national organization, you can team up with  family members, people from your neighborhood , or coworkers. Once you have a group together sit down and talk about your goals for the group. When you will meet, how you will provide support for each other etc.  This technique has tons of success across the country.  Many groups actually report 100% of their members reaching their weight loss goals even when they were significant losses of over 30 pounds.

Let me give you a few tips if you form your own group weight loss program.

1.Stick with people you can trust. You want to count on these people to take their weight loss seriously, and to also to motivate you to stick with your exercise routines and healthy eating habits. People who don’t try very hard, who make fun of you for trying, and who are not the kind you want!

2. Take it easy. You may have a strong desire to obtain your weight loss goals but you don’t want your group to turn into an aggressive win-at-all-costs cluster of enemies. Its much better to have a fun and light hearted group to be with. You can tell jokes, share recipes and ideas, and urge each other to stay with it. When the groups starts fighting over who lost more you might consider trying to change the group direction!

3. Meet on a regular basis. Accountability is paramount to success. Choose a neutral location, like the local gym or park. A libary would be a great place to exchange reports and information. Schedule a time that is consistent and send out and email to remind people of the meeting and what they should bring.

4. Celebrate your groups results. When someone obtains a goal, or you as a group obtain a goal you should celebrate by cooking a low-fat meal to share or go out for some entertainment. The Sharing of success is what makes it last.

I have helped set up several group weight loss programs in my local community and they are without a doubt one of the most powerful weight loss methods. If you’re having trouble staying motivated a group weight loss program could be right for you.
